Large Balancing Update

Hey Trainers,

In case you're someone who has tried this out and enjoyed it, I've done a balancing pass to the system. The biggest changes will involve another standardization to how the system approaches attack rolls and saving throws for moves, using the language of physical and special to normalize what stats are used.  This should help with the balance of the system, and see to it that each of the six stats has a distinct role, and that none are significantly better than others. The designators of melee attacks and ranged attacks still remain

                 - All moves are either "physical" or "special". Physical moves use strength for their attack rolls and for determining their saving throw DCs, and you make dexterity saving throws against the DC to resist the effects of physical moves. Special moves use wisdom for attack rolls and DCs, and you resist them with intelligence saving throws.  The playtest sheet has not yet been updated to reflect these changes, it could be some time as I think serious rearrangement would be necessary.

                   - This change helps simplify the process of understanding how your moves work, especially with how complex and overwhelming custom moves can feel. More importantly, this change keeps the dexterity stat in check. In the previous system, you could choose either strength or dexterity for your tangible attacks, however investing in dexterity was vastly more rewarding than investing in strength as it applied to more skills than strength, increased your offensive stat, and increased your AC. Now dexterity determines your ability to evade physical AoE and determines your AC which likens it very much to the concept increasing your "evasion" stat in the mainstream games, and strength determines the power of your physical moves.

                   - This normalization also helped out intelligence stat which was greatly lacking in potency. Now intelligence helps you resist the effects of special attacks that require saving throws, the kinds of abnormal attacks that usually require more than just speed to avoid. With this pokemon other than just psychic-types have something to gain out of investing in the stat. Psychic-types however remain particularly effective with this stat, with their updated type feature allowing them to use it as their offensive stat for special attacks in place of wisdom. With this psychic types have the unique ability to benefit both offensively and defensively for investing in a single stat. I am keeping an eye on that feature, but right now feel it is warranted given the still limited utility of the intelligence stat overall.

               - One of the main outliers when developing this system was the charisma stat. I have decided that it is mainly an out-of-combat stat, and its combat utility is mostly limited to determining the DC of effects that frighten or charm. These conditions can be particularly punishing to targets that fall under them, and pokemon that wish to invest in charisma to better inflict or resist these conditions should still feel the reward of doing so.

              - Rather than gain a bonus to AC, rock and steel type pokemon have flat AC values, reflecting both their tendency to be in-dexterous as well as the fact that they overwhelmingly have natural armor. I imagine anyone using a Lucario is going to feel like they're back in 5E playing a fighter again. Ground type pokemon lost their natural AC bonus but did not receive a flat armor value.  I find that the ground type is a great deal more diverse than rock or steel in their physical stature, and I am hesitant to make them even more difficult to hit given their natural burrow speed as this is often abused by players already in my experience (if any DMs are troubled by burrow speed abuse, I found that both ruling that it leaves a tunnel which can easily be followed and enforcing requirement of a climb speed on vertical tunnels has really evened the playing field while keeping it unique ;P).

Outside of this, the language of the document has been updated to reflect the new physical/special terminology and a number of features and mechanics were adjusted.
